Individual Counselling for Adolescents (ages 12 and up) and Adults

Emmerling Psychology offers individual counselling where clients only share information they are comfortable imparting, as in the beginning many topics are challenging to discuss and trust can take time to develop in any type of relationship. Our team works from diverse models and perspectives and believes it’s essential to find the right clinician to fit your unique needs. We encourage you to take your time in selecting who might be the best fit for you and your needs/goals.

Individual therapy can address many mental health concerns such as: depression, anxiety, eating disorders/disordered eating, body dysmorphia or body image concerns, trauma, relationship issues, perfectionism, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias, relationship struggles and communication, assertiveness, emotion regulation, and self-esteem.

There are many potential benefits of starting therapy which can include a reduction in emotional and mental fatigue, increase in sense of self-worth/confidence, developing emotional awareness and emotion regulation skills, a decrease in stress, and a reduction in overall symptoms.

Couples Counselling

Our team is highly experienced in Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), and Emotion-Focused Skills Training (EFST) approaches to healing with couples, families, and groups. These therapeutic models are promising, innovative, and offers a new perspective on how to address many of the concerns that underlie the development and maintenance of mental health concerns.

There are many reasons why couples may reach out for support and this can range from a desire to improve a relationship that has lost some of its spark to issues like infidelity and broken trust. Many couples are also looking to develop the skills needed to open up communication, learn to resolve conflict, and also repair ruptures in the bond.  At Emmerling Psychology, we believe it is important to understand the perspective of each person and the problematic patterns in the relationship in order to help support the couple in strengthening their emotional connection, understanding, and creating a more secure/safe bond.

Family Counselling

Our team is highly experienced in Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), and Emotion-Focused Skills Training (EFST) approaches to healing with couples, families, and groups. These therapeutic models are promising, innovative, and offers a new perspective on how to address many of the concerns that underlie the development and maintenance of mental health concerns.

Family relationship break down or conflict is a very common presenting concern and is often the result of individuals being hijacked by their own emotions and then attempting to get those needs met. At Emmerling Psychology, we believe in the healing power of families and how important it is to include and support all members of the family in the healing process. We strive to help families identify the maladaptive emotions and patterns that are maintaining symptoms or leading to conflict/relationship break downs. This involves creating a safe space for each person to process their emotions and learn new skills to have their voice/emotions heard, understood, and validated. It also means helping each person to have more awareness of their own emotions, patterns, and triggers so that they are able to have more control over their communication style.

Caregiver and Recovery Ally Support/ Emotion Focused Skills Training for Parents (EFST-P)

At Emmerling Psychology we believe that families are a key component in the healing process. It is often caregivers/recovery allies that are tasked with the role of helping their loved one or child heal. Many parents have shared with us, that they feel very helpless, lost, and fearful of taking on this role as they do not want to make anything worse for their loved one or feel ill equipped with the skills needed to bring about change.

Using Emotion Focused Skills Training (EFST), we support parents and loved ones of individuals with mental health concerns to be healing agents. Using Advanced Caregiving Skills, we empower and support parents/caregivers/recovery allies with communication and validation skills that can help increase understanding and emotional processing. This model is a skills-based approach that teaches practical and simple tools. The skills that are taught include learning to better understand and navigate their loved one’s emotions, how to address and work through challenges in motivation, and developing healthier and more consistent boundaries. It has been shown through research evidence as part of a large clinical trial, that when clinicians use the EFST-P model that caregivers have more confidence in taking on a  significant role which lead to significant results in their loved one’s mental health recovery.
